New Report Details Importance of STEM Skills

A new report from the Brookings Institution indicates that science, technology, engineering and math skills are needed for more than just high-tech professionals and engineers. By expanding the definition of a “STEM job” to any job that requires specialized knowledge in one of those fields, the report found:

  • 50 percent of STEM jobs do not require a degree. These include “blue-collar” and technical work.
  • STEM jobs comprise 20 percent of all jobs in the U.S. economy, a share that has doubled since the Industrial Revolution.
  • 26 million jobs in the U.S. are STEM jobs.

This report makes the work of engaging K-12 Central Texas students in STEM more important than ever. Our STEM Council programs use hands-on, project-based learning to introduce students to the magic of STEM. If you’d like to see this in action, be on the lookout for the invite to our Velocity presentations next month!
