2016 Community First! Village – African American Youth Harvest Foundation

AAYHF final presentation

Background: Mobile Loaves & Fishes began in 1998 when five parishioners of St. John Neumann Catholic Church began delivering meals out of the back of a minivan to men and women they found living on the streets of their city. Since that first truck run, teams of volunteers have served over 4 million meals, and are the largest prepared feeding program to the homeless and working poor in Austin. Today, in addition to continuing our truck ministry, we have expanded to include our Community First! Housing Program.

Community First! Village is a 27-acre, master-planned community that will provide affordable, permanent housing and a supportive community for over 200 chronically homeless, disabled people in central Texas.

Project Description: Students designed and built a prototype for a sustainable energy project to power the proposed Community First! Village and support the community’s need for low-cost energy. The project created “micro-grids”  that provides the minimum amount of electrical power to meet basic needs for the community. These “micro-grids” will utilize renewable energy and include energy storage.

Project Limitation:  Economic use of all generation sources for 24 hours, estimate number of years for the solution to provide a return on investment.

Community Needs: Team will identify current needs for electrical energy at Community First and present an objective design that will start to satisfy the need. (see provided Electric Bill)

Considerations: Cost, funding, availability, space requirements, legal land issues, permit requirements.
