Kickstarting STEM in Austin High Schools with Velocity

We are a month into this year’s Velocity programming and everyone is off to a great start. We have three projects happening at the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders, with students working on everything from Solar Design to self-irrigating gardens! And did you know we’re blogging about our process over at the State Farm Youth Advisory Board? We’re proud to be a recipient of their youth-led service-learning project grants for one of our Velocity Prep projects this summer, and to keep Continue Reading >

#AmplifyATX with Skillpoint!

To Amplify or not to Amplify? That is the question. We at Skillpoint Alliance strive every day to amplify our Austin community. Since 1994 more than 135,000 Texans have been impacted by Skillpoint Alliance. 135,000 is not just a number. That number represents moms and dads, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, grandmas and grandpas, nieces and nephews, sons and daughters and friends and neighbors. By providing efficient and effective programs, our students excel beyond their Continue Reading >

Health Care Industry Continually Growing

A quick search through local news provides many examples of the relevance of the health care industry in our everyday lives. Last week the residents of Round Rock, TX came together to attempt to set a world record for most people in the state certified in CPR. Likewise local UT scientists recently published a study in the journal “eLife,” detailing new findings about the size and capacity of human memory. Another example of health care's value is how Seton and the Dell Children’s Medical Center Continue Reading >

Gateway Graduate Highlight: Tom Saunders

Tom Saunders was taught the value of education and responsibility at an early age. Growing up in Erie, Pennsylvania, Tom recalls the required order of events each day after school: finish your homework, do your chores, and then you can go out to play. The day following his high school graduation, his mom knocked on his bedroom door and said, “Now, it’s time for you to find a job.” It’s this value of education and character that Tom still carries with him today. Per his mother’s instruction, Continue Reading >

This holiday season, we want to ask for your support in building human capital, and invite Continue Reading >

Student Spotlight: Dragonots Roaring Toward the 2015 FLL Season

It’s that time of year: FIRST Lego League (FLL) teams across central Texas are gearing up for competition by putting final touches on their projects and brushing up their code. We had the opportunity to catch up with Allison Dragonots, who were interviewed by FIRST in Texas a year ago. There is a lot of preparation that goes into an FLL season, both for the teams and for Skillpoint. Our Robotics Coordinator Noah is hard at work securing plans for the competitions in early December, and Continue Reading >

President Obama Proclaims National Apprenticeship Week

Apprenticeship training provides hands on job training as well as relevant classroom instruction to teach skills to individuals in the fields of manufacturing, healthcare, information technology and other industries. These opportunities build up a workforce necessary in society, while also giving individuals the skills required to earn a living wage. Right now, our country is Continue Reading >

Game Jam: From Idea to Reality

If you're unfamiliar with a Game Jam, think of it as a weekend filled with teams of industry amateurs and students who develop game ideas and bring them to life through rapid prototyping. Skillpoint’s hope for Game Jam is that aspiring game developers will share experiences and explore artistic expression through designing video games, resulting in educational game designs going to market. Casey Donnellan did just that, by designing Blue Marble, which was released on October 14th and is now Continue Reading >

Thank You for 21 Years!

On October 6th, Skillpoint celebrated 21 years of building human capital in Central Texas with a cocktail party at the Google Fiber Space in downtown Austin. The event brought together community, education, industry and government leaders from the region, all who play an important role in Skillpoint's work to provide opportunity to residents in Texas.   It was truly a special night for Skillpoint, as two of our program participants shared stories of life change, and we Continue Reading >
