Skillpoint Alliance

Student Bio: Brentlee Allen

"Prior to coming to the [Gateway] program, my life was full of unexpected twists and turns. I was on probation when the HVAC certification program began at Skillpoint, but the staff and instructor believed in me and allowed me to attend class without missing any probation meeting or my job. One day, Capstone Mechanical's HR rep came to speak to our class about what it looked like to work for their company, and explain the process for applying. I knew Capstone was a great company to work for Continue Reading >

This dedication has allowed companies like Build Your Future and National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), to promote the construction trade and celebrate individuals who chose the vocational route for education. For Skillpoint, our story began with the construction industry. In 1994, our organization (formerly known as the Capital Area Training Foundation) was created by the Continue Reading >

Celebrating Collaboration: How Skillpoint has Impacted the City of Waco

From the desk of Mallory Herridge, Skillpoint's Waco Program Director;  Greetings from the wonderful city of Waco! When I think about the new, hit show Fixer Upper (on HGTV) and all of the attention and popularity it has brought to Waco over the last couple of years, I think about how fitting its themes of making new and restoration are for our community.  I've seen Waco change significantly since 2002 but the change I'm most proud of is the growing culture and emphasis on cross-sector Continue Reading >

Of course, there are challenges, but organizations rarely let that stop them from graduating more workforce-ready community members or bringing more kids to camp. Skillpoint's Communications and Data Coordinator, Gina Watts, also a graduate student in Information Studies at the University of Texas, saw these efforts and wanted to Continue Reading >

An Intern’s Perspective: Alyssa Ortel

I spent the past few months as a Communications Intern at Skillpoint Alliance. Throughout the years I have worked in jobs where I was a cog in the machine working a minor role. Skillpoint Alliance has been a refreshing contrast to those experiences. It is an innovate, supportive and collaborative environment. My mentor Lindsay and I had weekly check-ins to stay on the same page; she always made sure I was satisfied with the experience I was gaining through my internship. I learned about Continue Reading >
