Congrats to the Central Texas FIRST 2014 World Championship Award Winners

Last week, more than 12,000 students from around the globe traveled to St. Louis, MO, to put their engineering skills to the test at the annual FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Championship, held at the Edward Jones Dome.

The three-day event came down to a heart-pounding conclusion Saturday night in front of a roaring crowd of 20,000 when four teams from San Jose, CA, Bloomfield Hills, MI, Holland, MI, and our very own Dallas, TX won the coveted FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC) Championship Winning Alliance.  In this year’s game, AERIAL ASSISTSM, FRC teams took to the field, where competing Alliance scored points by throwing balls over a truss, catching balls, and putting as many balls in goals as possible.  The more Alliance worked together to score, the more points their Alliance received.  This year, 68,175 students on 2,727 FRC teams in 17 countries participated in 98 Regional and District competitions.

As a Dell Powering the Possible Partner Youth Learning Partner, Skillpoint Alliance and the FIRST® in Texas Foundation were able to provide grants to 47, K-12 teams of students this season. These teams serve economically disadvantaged students and students underrepresented in STEM throughout the state of Texas, inspiring innovation and building Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Leadership skills in up to 580 disadvantaged students.

Dell worked with Skillpoint Alliance and FIRST® in Texas Foundation to promote STEM throughout Central Texas, specifically with FIRST® Robotics Programs.

“As a FIRST® parent, I have seen first-hand the powerful and inspiring effect these programs have on our children,” said John Pflueger, Principal Environmental Strategist at Dell. “As a mentor and Dell volunteer, I have found that giving back to the STEM community has been one of the most personally rewarding things I have done during my career.”
