Skillpoint Alliance Seeking Volunteers for Upcoming STEM Events

The STEM Council at Skillpoint Alliance is seeking over 250 volunteers to participate in the culminating winter tournaments of several robotics, civil engineering and game development programs its hosts in December and January. There are several opportunities through Skillpoint programs to help future leaders in STEM.

FIRST® ROBOTICS | December 7, 14, 15, 2013 AND January 25, 2014
A worldwide program through U.S. FIRST®, FLL and FTC are hands-on robotics tournaments where teams of elementary, middle and high school students design, build, and program robots and apply science, engineering and technology to real-world challenges. The upcoming Central Texas FIRST® LEGO®League (FLL) qualifying tournaments are happening December 7, 14, 15, 2013 and FIRST® Tech Challenge (FTC) qualifiers are happening on January 25, 2014. Future City Competition is a national, project-based learning experience where students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades imagine, design, and build cities of the future. Students work as a team with an educator mentor and an engineer mentor to plan cities using SimCity™ 4 Deluxe software; research and write solutions to an engineering problem; build tabletop scale models with recycled materials; and present their ideas before judges at Regional Competitions in January. The Future City Regional Competition is happening on January 18, 2014 in San Marcos. Volunteers can assist with set-up, check-in, team queuing, timekeeping, judging, breakdown and more. We are hosting a webinar all about JUDGING! This is designed for anyone interested, as well as those already registered. We will be going over what is involved with judging remotely AND on the day of the competition! GLOBAL GAME JAM | January 24 – 26, 2014
The Global Game Jam (GGJ) is the world’s largest game jam event taking place around the world at physical locations. Think of it as a hack-a-thon focused on game development. The weekend stirs a global creative buzz in games, while at the same time participants explore the process of development including programming, iterative design, narrative exploration or artistic expression. The event takes place over a 48 hour development cycle and the GGJ encourages novices to experts alike to participate. The Global Game Jam is happening January 24-26.
