Train Local, Hire Local Campaign

Austin, Texas (September 27, 2018) – In celebration of their 25th anniversary, Skillpoint Alliance is launching a fundraising campaign to connect partners, funders and supporters of workforce development, called Train Local, Hire Local. Since former mayor Bruce Todd’s call to action on the creation of apprenticeship and skills training for the City of Austin in 1994, Skillpoint Alliance has been a key provider in middle-skill job training to individuals joining the Electrical, HVAC and Plumbing fields.

The Train Local, Hire Local campaign plans to raise $50,000, which will support Central Texans joining non-traditional career paths, and further close the skills-gap motioned by the Master Community Workforce Plan last year.

The Workforce Plan created by Workforce Solutions Capital Area, is focused on helping individuals living in poverty find a path to financial stability, by aligning education and training providers’ with employers’ needs through 2021.

“We are very excited to launch Train Local, Hire Local as Skillpoint Alliance has a long history of providing skills-based training in the construction industry,” says Aaron Hill, Programs Director of Skillpoint Alliance.

Aaron continues, “As a partner in the Master Community Workforce Plan, which aims to provide upskill training to 10,000 under- or unemployed Central Texas, this giving campaign will allow us to continue providing a necessary service to the community and the growing construction industry in Central Texas.”

Train Local, Hire Local plans to engage the community through Skillpoint Alliance’s social media accounts by providing information, statistics and partner stories. To follow along with this initiative and get involved, follow Skillpoint Alliance on:

Skillpoint Alliance’s Gateway program is a rapid-learning model that provides Central Texas residents with industry recognized certifications, licensing and hands-on training in 4-8 weeks. Applicants are chosen based on professionalism, employability and willingness to succeed in their chosen field. Interested individuals are encouraged to apply on the Skillpoint Alliance website.
