An Intern’s Perspective: Alyssa Ortel

I spent the past few months as a Communications Intern at Skillpoint Alliance. Throughout the years I have worked in jobs where I was a cog in the machine working a minor role. Skillpoint Alliance has been a refreshing contrast to those experiences. It is an innovate, supportive and collaborative environment.

My mentor Lindsay and I had weekly check-ins to stay on the same page; she always made sure I was satisfied with the experience I was gaining through my internship. I learned about working in marketing in a non-profit and now have a portfolio of work I can show future employers. I used social media with a professional organization, blogged, and even dabbled with design work for graduation programs.

The best part of my internship was belonging to a great support network. Everyone at Skillpoint Alliance is willing to help each other out. They care about you as an individual as well as your professional growth. I had an overall amazing experience with this group. A huge shout out to my colleagues at Skillpoint Alliance, thank you for welcoming me and helping me grow!

Even though I am leaving to pursue another opportunity out of state for the summer, I will not forget the experience I gained here. The mission of Skillpoint Alliance is inspiring to me. I love that they’re doing everything they can in order to help the local workforce and inspire youth to enter STEM fields. I am looking forward to returning to Austin this fall to further my career, and I’ll definitely be keeping up with the work Skillpoint is doing in the community!
